Poachers Target Escaped Giraffes Near Vryheid

GIRAFFES UNDER FIRE...

POACHERS HUNT DOWN GIRAFFES IN ZULULAND.

A shocking wildlife event is happening just a few kilometres off the R34 near Vryheid, in the Thaka Valley region close to a farm called El Torro.

Two escaped giraffes have been hunted and killed by poachers since last Friday — and reports suggest that at least five more are being targeted.

The animals allegedly escaped from a facility known as Kewulani Game Reserve, a place so obscure that it does not appear on maps or even on Google Earth.

Despite the clear illegality of these killings, no intervention has been made to stop the ongoing hunt.

String of Giraffe Poaching Incidents in KwaZulu-Natal

Earlier this month, another gruesome poaching case was reported — a mother giraffe and her calf were found strangled to death in snares, lying just metres apart.

This brings the total to at least four giraffes killed illegally in the area in recent weeks.

Giraffes Are Specially Protected Under KZN Law

Under KwaZulu-Natal’s Nature Conservation Ordinance, giraffes are officially listed as “Specially Protected Game.”This means they cannot be hunted, captured, or killed without a specific permit from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the provincial conservation authority.

The situation grows more dire as sources allege that "the hunting will contine till they all dead".

Population Decline Threatens Africa’s Tallest Animal

Giraffes are not yet considered endangered, but, their future is bleak with an estimated 40% drop in wild populations over the past three decades.

This area is under the control of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
