Mawana Elephants Scattered After Helicopter Chase in Zululand

MAWANA ELEPHANTS!

Zululand Herd remains scattered...

A helicopter was used to push the Mawana elephants from an area near the Thangami Spa and the Steadham Community land towards the allocated "green pen".

A group of elephants numbering around nineteen were apparently herded into an open pen.

A group of ten or more of the Mawana Herd fled the helicopter and are scattered in the area.

The herd of elephants are now thought to number around twenty-eight after nine of their family were gunned down last year on the 31st August in an area adjoining the green pen.

The green pen is made up of private game farm and land belonging to communities. It is said to be between 7,500 and 8,300 hectares.

Years of pressure on EKZN and publicity on Human Elephant Conflict in the area seems to have led to "some" understanding, superceeding laws that would normally apply.

Recently that pressure increased due to farm El Torro (historic waterhole) giving "permission to shoot" to local authority Ezemvelo if the elephants were seen on the farm.

War Elephants syndrome has offered the herd some tragic protection.

No warning was given by Ezemvelo to farmers and communities that there was an attempted capture taking place.

The news is being spread via the Bush Telegraph and communities are expressing relief about "some of the elephants" being taken away.
